Wynwood’s Second Avenue to be Converted into Pedestrian-Only Street for Miami Art Week 2018

Neighborhood poised to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors to celebrate Art Week

Miami, FL (November 28, 2018) – Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood—a main attraction during Miami Art Week—will convert Second Avenue, from 20th Street to 29th Street, into a pedestrian-only thoroughfare from Friday, December 7 through Sunday, December 9 to welcome visitors from across the globe. In 2017, an estimated 350,000 visitors enjoyed the fifty-square-block arts district during the three-day street closure for its selection of street art murals, James Beard Award-nominated dining options, and unique retailers. The decision to temporarily convert Second Avenue into a pedestrian-only street has been made by the Wynwood Business Improvement District (BID), working closely with the City of Miami Police Department and City administrators with the goal of making the neighborhood’s trademark attractions more accessible and walkable.

“Wynwood welcomes visitors to experience its world-renowned street art and unique food and beverage options this Miami Art Week on foot. The annual transformation of Second Avenue into a pedestrian-only street makes Wynwood safer and more enjoyable during this very busy time for the district,” said Manny Gonzalez, Executive Director of the Wynwood BID.

Miami Police will be stationing traffic control officers at primary intersections along NW 29th Street, NW 20th Street and North Miami Avenue, in an effort to ease the flow of vehicular traffic throughout the area.

“Discovering Second Avenue entirely on foot is a one-of-a-kind Miami Art Week event in and of itself. We thank our partners, the City of Miami Police Department and City administrators, for working with us each to ensure a safe and memorable experience for Art Week visitors as Wynwood continues to grow as a global destination,” said Albert Garcia, Vice-Chair of the Wynwood BID Board.

In recent years, Wynwood has emerged as a global center for arts and culture, with the neighborhood’s warehouses now doubling as canvasses for what has become the nation’s highest concentration of street art. Wynwood’s successful transformation from a nondescript industrial district to a bustling, arts-focused neighborhood has been driven by private property owners and gallerists who have collaborated directly with artists to remake the district with vibrant public art.

Specific details on the street closure are as follows:

NW 2nd Avenue will be closed to all Northbound and Southbound vehicular traffic between NW 20th Street and NW 29th Street on December 7th from 3:00pm – 6:00am, December 8th from 2:00pm – 6:00am, December 9th from 2:00pm – 6:00am.
