ART BASEL

2010-12-01

Once every other blue moon or so, a certain forgotten section of a given city is completely transformed. There isn’t a plan, no tacit agreement between backroom parties, in fact, there’s nothing official at all. It’s simply happenstance. A point in time when like-minded forces collide and the cosmos crack a wide and knowing smile.

Such was the case with Wynwood, a mostly forgotten inner city neighborhood made up of warehouses and factories and wholesale outlets, many of which that had long since closed and left in their wake nothing but ghosts. Like New York’s SOHO and East Village back in the ‘70s and ‘80s, or the Downtown L.A. of today, Wynwood was a place where artists and gallerists could do what they are driven to do, as they saw fit, in spaces that were at once historical and expansive. And they could do so smack dab in the center of a city racked with magic.

Little did these driven folks know though that what they did would not only remake an entire district; it would help to remake the image of Miami itself.

It is in that spirit that the Wynwood Arts District Association (WADA) was formed. Comprised of gallerists, collection curators, museum heads and, of course, artists, WADA is the de facto steward of a District that is now home to over 50 galleries, four museums, numerous arts complexes and artist studios, as well as an increasing array of satellite fairs affiliated with Art Basel.

Officially, the Wynwood Arts District is bounded by I-95 to the West and Biscayne Boulevard to the East, and runs from 20th to 36th streets. In actuality Wynwood has become the unequivocal epicenter of arts in Greater Miami. From its monthly Second Saturday Art Walks to its bustling café culture, this is a neighborhood alive with action, and much of that action is guided by the Wynwood Arts District Association.

SCISSORS AND GLUE

2010-11-10

Zuckerfilm Productions is proud to present the trailer for its new documentary film, Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project.   The film is an intimate look at a young city with an old soul. This documentary examines the way in which artistic expression and exhibition relates to and also influences community development. Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project  dares to ask, ”Which is more powerful, culture’s influence on art or art’s influence on culture?”

Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project  follows Helmut Schuster on his journey from gallery owner in Berlin to the founding of his new Gallery Schuster in Miami’s Wynwood district. Drawing inspiration from Miami’s recent art renaissance, this film uses his experiences to illustrate the international draw of the city’s art scene.  Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project features discussions with many of Miami’s  art community members including: Bonnie Clearwater (MOCA), Rosa De La Cruz, Thea Goldman, David Lombardi, Thomas Collins (MAM), Jason Rubell (The Rubell Family Collection), Terry Riley, Dennis Scholl (The Knight Foundation & World Class Boxing), Silvia Karman Cubiñá (Bass Museum), Katherine Hinds (The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse), Constance Margulies (The Lotus House), Craig Robins, Fred Snitzer, and many more. This documentary addresses the role and responsibility of art in urban society, while highlighting the unique nature of Miami’s people and their relationship to the arts.
